This product is therefore not only aimed at new customers, but in particular at all those who want to take the SAP Cloud Journey from an existing BW system and have all the elements for the path to the future available in an integrated way with the Business Data Cloud, without losing existing investments. The integration means that new potential (especially in the areas of AI and machine learning) can be exploited directly.

Which SAP solution is right for you?

Do you want an on-premise or cloud solution? If an on-premise solution is desired, only SAP BW/4HANA can be considered. If the data can be stored in the cloud or this solution approach is preferred, SAP Datasphere can also be used. In this case, other criteria are decisive.
Which planning applications are already available or which technology is preferred?

If SAP BPC embedded (or BI-IP/BW-IP) is already in use and is to continue to be used, SAP BW4/HANA is recommended as a data warehouse, as the existing development can be adopted there.
If there is no planning application yet or it runs natively in the SAC, SAP Datasphere is recommended, as seamless planning with a live-connected SAP Datasphere model is possible here.

Do you need an integrated consolidation solution?

SAP BW enables the consolidation of financial data with SAP BPC or SAP BCS at any time. SAP Datasphere does not currently offer a consolidation solution.

If you are using SAP BW 7.x, which conversion approach would you like to pursue?

For brownfield or bluefield, SAP BW/4HANA is recommended as a direct successor and SAP Datasphere is associated with significantly greater effort.
In principle, SAP BW/4HANA and SAP Datasphere are equally suitable for greenfield, but it depends on the exact requirements.

Which source systems and external data sources would you like to connect to your solution?

While SAP BW mainly integrates SAP on-premise pre-systems or SAP BW systems, SAP Datasphere offers a variety of out-of-the-box connectors. These enable the connection of SAP and non-SAP systems, both on-premise and in the cloud, as well as databases and file servers such as Amazon Blob, Google Cloud Drive and SharePoint. Although it is possible to link such systems with SAP BW, this is much more difficult.

With Open Connector, customer-specific source systems can also be connected easily and efficiently in SAP Datasphere.

The Data Marketplace in SAP Datasphere also makes it easier to acquire and update external data.

What do your project workspaces look like and how would you like to use them?

In SAP BW, it is often difficult to create and host ad-hoc data models for short and medium-term projects in addition to the everyday business data models. Although this is possible with SAP BW Workspace, it is complicated to use and the functionalities are limited.

SAP Datasphere, on the other hand, enables the creation of various project spaces in addition to the regular business spaces. These spaces can share data models with each other and have their own data storage and data models. Data extractions, transformations and loads are also supported and easy to use.

Which application developments including UI would you like to use and should these already be integrated?

Applications including user interfaces such as Fiori Apps or Web Dynpro can be developed in the SAP BW system.

SAP Datasphere, on the other hand, is primarily a database system and applications must be hosted on other platforms such as BTP, ABAP Cloud or BW/4HANA.

What does your authorization concept look like?

The authorization concepts and tools in SAP BW are mature and easy to configure. These include authorization objects, roles, profiles, analysis authorizations and authorizations for InfoProviders.

Many authorization concepts can also be implemented in SAP Datasphere, but the effort required to create and maintain them is significantly higher.

If you are using SQL Data Warehouse and BI tools, which conversion approach would you like to take?

If you use SQL Data Warehouse and BI tools, SAP Datasphere is the ideal choice for conversion. SAP Datasphere supports SQL views, table functions and native HANA database modeling, which makes the migration from SQL Data Warehouse to SAP Datasphere much easier and more convenient.

Do you primarily want static reports with graphics? Analysis for Office is a powerful tool for creating dynamic work reports that allows the end user to set filters, add dimensions, activate hierarchical displays and many other analysis options. However, there are limits to the graphical representations. If complex graphics are required to display the report data, e.g. for management, SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) is the tool of choice.
Should the reporting also be usable on a smartphone or tablet?

SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) offers a user-friendly interface and optimized performance for mobile devices, making it much easier to use on smartphones and tablets. Unlike SAP Analysis for Office, which is primarily designed for desktop applications, SAC enables seamless interaction with data and reports on the move. The responsive design and special functions for mobile devices promote flexibility and accessibility so that users can access important analyses anytime and anywhere.

Do you already have a BW system whose planning functionality is to move towards the public cloud in the future?

In this scenario, the SAP Business Data Cloud may be an option, which secures the use of existing investments in the BW 7.5 or BW/4 system (in the form of a private cloud license as part of SAP RISE) and at the same time includes the future public cloud setup with Datasphere and SAC. It is also possible to seamlessly integrate new AI and machine learning applications.
